Dynamic Nucleation of Ice Induced by a Single Stable Cavitation Bubble
نویسنده
چکیده
1 Abstr~ct Dynamic nucleation of ice induced by a cavitation bubble in undercooked water is observed using an acoustic levitation technique. The observation indicates that a high pressure pulse associated with a collapsing bubble is indeed responsible for the nucleation of a high pressure phase of ice. Both the non-luminescing and Iuminescing cavitation bubbles require the minimum undercooking, 5 K, to inidate the ice formation. This is attributed to the temperature rise due to the heat associated with compression ardor the undercooking required for normal ice to nucleate on the high pressure phase.

The nucleation of ice by power ultrasound at elevated temperatures (compared to control experiments) has been well documented for the past four decades, however there is a limited understanding of the influence, if any of cavitation bubbles. This work reports high-speed observations of the crystallisation of ice in the presence of acoustic cavitation. The experimental system allowed a small sam...
متن کاملFreeze/Thaw-Induced Embolism: Probability of Critical Bubble Formation Depends on Speed of Ice Formation
Bubble formation in the conduits of woody plants sets a challenge for uninterrupted water transportation from the soil up to the canopy. Freezing and thawing of stems has been shown to increase the number of air-filled (embolized) conduits, especially in trees with large conduit diameters. Despite numerous experimental studies, the mechanisms leading to bubble formation during freezing have not...
متن کاملCavitation and water fluxes driven by ice water potential in Juglans regia during freeze–thaw cycles
Freeze-thaw cycles induce major hydraulic changes due to liquid-to-ice transition within tree stems. The very low water potential at the ice-liquid interface is crucial as it may cause lysis of living cells as well as water fluxes and embolism in sap conduits, which impacts whole tree-water relations. We investigated water fluxes induced by ice formation during freeze-thaw cycles in Juglans reg...

This paper demonstrates a new method to porate single suspension living cell membrane using cavitation bubble-induced high speed jet flow. A microfluidic chip with an array of single cell trapping structures is designed and fabricated to trap sing cell and induce the asymmetric collapse of the cavitation bubble. Myeloma cells suspended in Trypan blue saline solution is tested and single Myeloma...
متن کاملStatistics of acoustically induced bubble-nucleation events in in vitro blood: a feasibility study.
Bubbles can form in biological tissues through ultrasonic activation of natural gas nuclei. The damaging aftereffects raise safety concerns. However, the population of nuclei is currently unknown, and bubble nucleation is stochastic and thus unpredictable. This study investigates the statistical behavior of bubble nucleation experimentally and introduces a model-based analysis to determine the ...
